Rant: The day a 'simple' injector swap on a 6.7 Powerstroke turned into a 12 hour nightmare

Last Tuesday, a guy brought in his 2015 F-250 with a rough idle... figured it was one bad injector. Pulled the valve cover and the hold-down bolt on cylinder 3 snapped flush. Spent the next 8 hours drilling it out in the worst spot, with metal shavings everywhere I didn't want them. Finally got it, but the whole job took until midnight. Anyone have a better trick for those snapped bolts besides just praying?

Twelve hours seems like a long time... it's just one bolt. Couldn't you have used a left-hand drill bit and an extractor? Those usually pop right out if you're careful.

Ugh, @jamiesingh, that's the thing about advice from outside the situation. It always sounds so simple in theory, doesn't it? You can have the perfect tool, but real life just adds rust and rounded-off heads and sheer bad luck. It's like watching a cooking show versus burning dinner yourself.

Just one bolt" is exactly what @claire_fisher41 means about theory versus reality.
