Debate: should we yank ugly veg or let em keep growing for the story?

So I had this beet that was basically a mutant, three legs and a lump. My neighbor said pull it it's gonna be woody and gross. I said nah let it ride. Ended up roasting it and it was one of the sweetest I've ever had. But now I'm second guessing myself. Do you guys pull the ugly ones early cause you think they'll be tough? Or do you let em go full term and risk it? I've got a twisted carrot right now that looks like a pretzel and I'm torn. What's your rule on this?

Haven't you ever had a wonky veg surprise you with flavor though? I mean, sometimes those ugly ones put all their energy into taste instead of looks. What makes you think the twisted carrot would be any different than that beet?

Oh come on @patricia905, you can't seriously think a twisted carrot is the same as an ugly beet! Beets are just naturally lumpy and weird shaped, but a carrot that's all gnarled up usually means it struggled to grow properly, so it's probably tougher and less sweet. I'd rather grab the straight ones that had perfect growing conditions, those are the ones that taste the best in my experience!
