PSA: The old 'open door policy' didn't work until I put a chair in the hall

That's a clever trick for sure, but it feels a bit like a workaround. The real issue might be a culture where people don't feel safe just walking into an office. Being in the hall helps, but fixing that underlying vibe is what makes people actually want to talk.

Wasted a whole morning trying to level a crane with a busted bubble vial

Damn, that's brutal @the_miles. It's crazy how one tiny part can cause so much damage and cost. Your buddy's story is a solid reminder to just stop and get the right tool.

My favorite shears just gave out during a precision cut yesterday.

Disagree completely with keeping duplicate tools like kai_west said. Carrying a full backup for everything is a waste of money and space. Tools are built to last, and a failure like your shears is just a freak accident. You got eight years out of them, that's a good run. My backup plan is just having a basic pair around for emergencies, not mirroring my whole kit. Why spend hundreds on a second set of your best shears that just sit there?

I watched a kid fix a flat on the Burke-Gilman Trail with a multi-tool and a stick, and it changed how I think about roadside repairs.

That's a great example of making do with what you have. I read a story once about a cyclist using a dollar bill as a temporary tire boot to cover a gash in the sidewall. It got them home without the tube bulging out. Sometimes the simplest fix is just using your head.

Talking to my mechanic about his mortgage application made me check my own score

It's wild how they keep moving the finish line, @parkerkim... makes you wonder if the whole system is just designed to keep people chasing a number.
