I always thought our company's legal team was just a cost center until the deposition last Tuesday.

Really? I've always seen them as a shield. Our legal team caught a bad clause in a vendor contract last year that saved us from a huge penalty. They also train our sales staff on what not to say, which stops problems before they start. That's not a cost, it's cheap insurance.

But how often does that actually happen? Most contracts are pretty standard, and sales training can only do so much. It feels like overkill for everyday business.

That's a good point about training, but in my experience, the standard contracts are where the biggest traps hide. A vendor can slip in a sneaky auto-renewal or a crazy liability clause that looks normal at first. Our legal folks review those "standard" agreements and find stuff our sales team would never catch.
