My whole home network went down during a big storm last night and the backup power didn't kick in
I was in the middle of watching a live stream about the recent power grid stuff when everything went black. My UPS unit, which I bought for this exact reason, just beeped once and died. I had to use my phone's data to check the local outage map, and only 12 houses on my street were affected. It felt way too specific. Has anyone else had a backup system fail right when you needed it most?

Oh man, that's the worst. My own UPS once gave up during a brownout, but only after powering the single, useless desk lamp I forgot was plugged into it. The router and computer were dark, but that lamp shone bright for a full three minutes like a tiny, mocking beacon. I felt so betrayed by a power strip with dreams.

That "tiny, mocking beacon" line from @tessa177 is perfect. It's always the dumbest stuff that survives. My neighbor's fancy whole-house generator failed last winter, but the battery in his kid's annoying singing Christmas reindeer in the yard kept going for hours. Just that one song, over and over, in the dark and cold. The backup tech we trust always flops, but the junk just won't quit.
