Watch out for that cheap padding underlay from the big box stores

Honestly, I put some down in a bedroom job in Tacoma about two months ago. It felt fine in the roll, but after just a few weeks the homeowner called me back. The carpet was already feeling flat and you could see every seam in the pad through the carpet. Ngl, it was a 6-pound rebond pad I got on sale. Now I'm eating the cost to go back and re-stretch over a proper 8-pound pad. Has anyone else had a pad fail that fast on a light-use room?

Yeah, that's the thing with a lot of stuff now. It's built to feel okay in the store, but it just doesn't hold up in real life. You see it with tools, furniture, all kinds of things. Saving a few bucks upfront just costs you more later when you have to fix it.

Totally agree with what @keithwalker said about furniture. Bought a cheap bookshelf that felt solid in the showroom. Two months later it started leaning like the Tower of Pisa. Ended up spending more on real wood brackets to reinforce it than I saved.

My friend works at a furniture store and says the display models often have extra screws and glue you don't get in the box. They build them to last just long enough for you to buy it. What's a good way to check for that before you take it home?
