My buddy swore by a cheap tarp for wind, but it ripped on my trip to the Rockies.
He said a $20 poly tarp was fine for high winds, but a gust tore it after two nights. Should you always invest in a proper shelter, or are budget options sometimes worth the risk?

Seriously? It's a tarp. They all rip eventually. Your buddy's cheap one just met a strong gust sooner. If you're not out in crazy storms often, a budget option gets the job done. Just don't cry when it fails.

Come on @butler.brian, that's a bad take... a good tarp shouldn't just give up like that. You get what you pay for, and a cheap one leaves you wet and fixing things.
