My uncle swore by the 'free hotel breakfast buffet lunchbox' trick and honestly, he was a genius

Yeah the timing thing is key. I read a whole article about how hotels actually plan for some food to go missing at the end of the service. They make more than they need because they'd rather have too much than run out for paying guests. So grabbing a couple things right as they're about to clear it is often seen as okay, or at least they look the other way. It's when people get greedy with giant containers that they start making rules.

So the real move is timing it right before they close up. Did your uncle ever push it too far though, like trying to stuff a whole box of cereal in his bag? Some places have gotten really strict about taking food out of the dining area.

My uncle did the same thing... always had a couple of ziplock bags in his jacket pocket. The real trick is hitting the buffet right before they close it down, when they're less likely to care if you take a few extra muffins or pastries. He'd pack enough for a solid afternoon snack and save himself five bucks every single day. It adds up over a year, especially if you're traveling for work a lot.
