A mason named Sal in Newark taught me to butter a block with the trowel tip, not the middle, and my joints quit squeezing out | Bricklayers - Topic Shares
I mean sure the tip thing works but squeeze out is just part of the game sometimes. You clean it up and move on, it's not some huge deal. Been laying for a while and half the guys I know never even think about it and their walls are fine.
Had the same issue when I started laying block years back. An old timer on a job in Jersey told me to hold the trowel more like a pencil and drag the tip along the edge to pick up the mud, then roll it on with a little wrist snap. Kept my mortar bed way more even and stopped the squeeze out almost right away. What really helped was slowing down and not trying to load the whole trowel every time. Once I got the tip technique down my walls looked cleaner and I wasted less mud too.
