PSA: An old-timer told me to always pre-heat my bevel grinder's backing plate

He said it would stop the weld from sticking and tearing, and after ruining a 3-foot seam on a 3/8" plate last month, I tried it. It worked perfectly on the next one. Anyone have other little tricks for keeping a clean bevel?

Pre-heat the backing plate? That's wild, I've never heard of anyone doing that. I always just assumed it was a lost cause once the weld stuck. How hot do you even get it, just a quick pass with a torch?

Yeah, just a quick torch pass to get it warm to the touch works for me. The key is it stops that initial chill from the plate that makes the weld grab. Saves a ton of cleanup time later.

So you just warm it up enough to feel hot?
