This guy at the Portland game cafe tried to explain his custom Gloomhaven rule set for an hour

I was just trying to grab a coffee and play a quick round of Azul, but this guy named Mark sat down and started laying out his own rule book. He had a binder full of notes and said he spent 6 months reworking the monster AI. He got really into it, showing me charts and talking about 'action economy balance.' I just wanted to place some tiles. Has anyone else had a stranger try to teach you their homebrew rules for a huge game?
