My sister said board game nights are just for nerds who can't talk to people

She said it at a family dinner last week, and I just sat there. I run a weekly game group in my garage, and we have a guy who drives 45 minutes from Tacoma to play. I told her it's about building a shared story, not just rolling dice. She shrugged and said 'sounds like a crutch.' Made me wonder if other people see our hobby that way. Do you ever get that kind of pushback from friends or family?

Board games are just a thing people do for fun, like watching sports or going to bars. Your sister's comment says more about her need to judge than about your hobby. People who drive that far clearly get something real out of it, a crutch doesn't build a weekly group. Maybe she just doesn't get it, and that's fine. Not every activity needs to be for everyone.

My cousin drove an hour each way for a D&D group for two years and it totally wrecked his schedule. He missed family stuff constantly. I mean, maybe the sister is just worried and saying it badly. If you need to travel that far every single week, it could be a sign you're avoiding other parts of your life. Some hobbies do become a crutch, idk.

But like, is it that deep? People drive that far for sports games too and nobody calls that a crutch.
