Question about watching a show in a different order

I tried watching the new season of 'Dark Echoes' without seeing the first two, thinking I could just pick it up. I was totally lost and confused for five episodes straight. Has anyone else tried jumping into a show late and actually had it work out?

Jumping into a show late is like trying to join a gym class halfway through (I see this all the time). People walk in, miss the warm-up and the basic moves, and then they're just copying others without knowing why. It never really clicks. @the_jennifer's Chrono Gate example is perfect for that. You need the foundation, or you're just watching random people do random things.

Totally get that feeling... tried watching the third season of "Chrono Gate" first because my friend said it was the best. Big mistake. Had zero clue who anyone was or why they were fighting. Some shows are just built different, you know? Like you need all the pieces for it to make any sense at all.

Yeah, I read somewhere that @the_jennifer's right, some shows just don't work without the backstory...
