My neighbor Sarah lost twelve pepper plants to a late frost in May. She had started them from seed in her basement under grow lights, spent months babying them. One night the forecast was wrong, the temperature dropped, and they were just gone by morning. It's a gut punch after all that work.

Used to think people who covered their plants were just being too careful. Then I lost a whole flat of heirloom tomatoes I'd raised from seed, just like Sarah's peppers. Watching those limp, blackened stems in the morning sun... it changes you. Now I keep old sheets by the back door and check the forecast twice.
