The day I stopped chasing my chickens around the yard

For years, I'd try to herd my six hens back into the coop at dusk, which was a 15 minute stress-fest for all of us. About three months ago, I read a tip about using a specific treat, like dried mealworms, to call them. Now, I just shake the bag at sunset and they all come running from the far corners. It takes maybe 90 seconds, and nobody gets flustered. Has anyone else found a simple trick that totally changed your daily routine?

What brand of mealworms do you use? I tried that once but my hens barely looked up from scratching. Maybe mine are just picky, or maybe the quality varies a lot. Did you have to train them to recognize the sound of the bag at first?

Disagree completely. Training chickens with treats just makes them fat and lazy. My neighbor did that and now his birds won't even forage, they just camp by the back door waiting for handouts. It ruins their natural behavior. @xenar14 might be onto something with picky hens, because that method assumes all animals are the same. A little daily herding is good for them, keeps them moving. My birds are healthier because they work for their food.
