My 'waterproof' boots on the Enchantments trail were just heavy sneakers the whole time

The final clue was my buddy in Seattle asking why my feet were soaked after a puddle, then laughing for a solid minute. Anyone else have a gear fail that was painfully obvious in hindsight?

Gear fails are a special kind of humbling. I once trusted a "windproof" jacket that turned into a useless kite in a light breeze on a ridge walk. The worst part is you usually buy into the marketing hype without a second thought, like the tag saying "waterproof" must be true. You only learn the hard way, shivering or soaked, while your smarter friends just nod quietly.

My "waterproof" boots let in a stream crossing and I squished for miles, it's the WORST feeling.

Ever notice how this happens with everything, not just gear? We see a label like "all natural" or "professional grade" and just switch our brains off. That "stormproof" umbrella I bought folded inside out in a light rain, it's the same trick.
