Almost lost a tent pole in a snowstorm on the John Muir Trail last August
The wind snapped one of my aluminum poles near Muir Pass around 11,000 feet, and I had to splint it with a trekking pole and duct tape for the next 3 days. Has anyone else improvised a fix like that on a high altitude route?

Dude a trekking pole splint? That's straight up MacGyver stuff right there. 3 days at 11k feet with that setup must have been nerve wracking.

Nerve wracking? Not really. Trekking poles are built strong. Wrapped it with duct tape and some cut up foam from my sleeping pad. Held solid for three days. That's the thing about being in the backcountry. You work with what you've got. MacGyver stuff is just problem solving when you're miles from help.
