I was convinced the best tacos in Austin were downtown until I found a truck near the airport

I visited a friend there and he took me to a tiny truck on a gravel lot off Highway 71. The al pastor was cut right off the spit, and the tortillas were made fresh in front of you. I'd always followed the crowd to the famous spots, but this place had a line of locals in work boots that told the real story. Has anyone else found a better meal in an unexpected part of town?

Forget the food itself for a second and consider the parking lot gravel. The best spots always have that crunchy, uneven gravel you have to walk across, which weeds out the people who just want a quick, easy instagram shot. You're there for the food, not the ambiance, and that gravel is the first sign you've found something real.

Read a whole article about this once, and @uma306 is totally right about the gravel test.
