Had to choose between a dig in Greece or a lab job in Boston. I picked the lab, and honestly, it was the best call for my career.

That's a tough call, but totally get it. Sometimes the practical move is the right one.

Actually been thinking about this a lot lately. Ross.river is right that practical moves matter, but what if the "practical" choice now kills your drive for the thing you actually care about in a year? Seen people take the safe job and just get totally burned out and bitter. The real cost isn't always money, it's losing the spark to try something else later. Gotta weigh that quiet quit of the soul against the short-term win.

Nothing like a slow motion soul-crushing at 9 to 5 to make you wonder if that sunny beach would have been worth the student loans. Hell, a bad lab job can make a person nostalgic for a bathroom break in a hot port-a-potty on a dig site. Guess the real question is whether you're saving your career or just your resume.

Read a book called "Shop Class as Soulcraft" a while back that talked about this exact thing. Basically said white collar work can hollow you out because you never see the finished product of what you do.
That desk job grind sounds rough. Maybe a good choice is one that leaves you enough energy to figure out the next move.
