That homeowner who made me climb back down to check a knot in the trunk
Three months ago in Asheville. Lady stops me mid-climb on a massive red oak. Yells up that I missed a knot near the base. I'm thinking she's wrong, but I come down anyway. Sure enough, there was a little pocket of rot inside that knot I skimmed over. She used to be a forest ranger or something. Ever had a client spot something you missed?

Haven't we all had that moment where the homeowner turns out to be a retired tree expert? My last one was an arborist who made me feel like I was back in training.

Oh man, I've totally been there! It's the worst when you think you're just dealing with a normal homeowner and suddenly they're dropping tree science on you like it's nothing. What worked for me was just leaning into it, honestly. I started asking them questions like "What would you do here?" or "How would you handle this one?" and they loved it. It made them feel heard and they usually gave me some solid tips, so I actually learned a thing or two from those jobs (which was a nice bonus).
