My cousin's dinner party turned into an oven repair emergency
My cousin's oven started smoking right as guests arrived. I got a frantic call and headed over. After opening it up, I saw a wire completely fried from years of grease buildup. It took me two hours to clean the mess and replace the part. This happens so often because people skip simple cleaning. Now I make a point to tell everyone about regular oven checks. It's frustrating when folks ignore basic care until things break. What do you say to convince people to maintain their appliances?

That's crazy it got so bad from just skipping cleanings. I mean, how many years of grease does it take to fry a wire completely? Maybe it's just me but that visual is kind of horrifying.

That basement flood story hits close to home. A buddy of mine ignored his water heater's weird noise for months, said he'd get to it. Came home to a finished basement with two inches of water. The slow leak finally blew. Cost him way more in repairs than a simple service call would have. It's always the stuff you mean to check but keep putting off. What's the one thing in your house you know you should look at but haven't?

Ugh, that's the worst, @wyattclark. My gutters are totally packed with leaves right now... been saying I'll clean them for weeks. Just waiting for a ceiling leak to finally give me the push, I guess.
