That's a solid tip for checking the compressor itself. Feeling the whole unit can be misleading if the fan is just moving air. The discharge line tells you exactly what the pump is putting out.

My buddy wasted a whole weekend trying to fix his AC because he just felt the outside. Turned out the fan was fine but the compressor line was stone cold. He could've saved a ton of time.
