Finally had a perfect composting week after 4 months of trial and error

I live in a 500 sq ft studio in Chicago and my worm bin has been a disaster for almost half a year with fruit flies and smell. Last Tuesday I switched to a layered system with shredded newspaper and frozen scraps and it actually worked no flies no stink. Has anyone else tried freezing scraps before adding them to their bin?

Used to think freezing scraps was totally unnecessary and just added an extra step for no reason. I was stubborn about it for months, kept telling myself my worms would just deal with it eventually. But after dealing with a nasty fruit fly infestation that spread to my houseplants I finally caved and tried it. Now I genuinely don't think I'll ever go back. The frozen scraps break down way faster once they thaw and somehow the smell is almost nonexistent compared to room temp food. My worms seem to actually prefer it too they swarm the frozen chunks way more than fresh stuff. You've converted me into a believer.

oh man @ninaross i was exactly the same way, fought it for months until the fruit flies got so bad i had to nuke my whole setup and start over from scratch. now i freeze everything in ziplock bags and just dump a frozen block in every feeding, my worms go absolutely nuts for it way faster than any fresh scraps.
