Can we talk about the time I tried to explain the plot of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' to my plumber last month?

He was fixing a leak under my sink in Phoenix, and after I spent 20 minutes on the Instrumentality Project, he just looked up and said, 'So the big robots are sad, and the kid needs a hug?' which honestly, is a pretty solid summary.

Okay but come on, it's not just that. The plumber's take is funny but it misses the point. The show is about way more than just sad people. It's about how messed up it is to make kids fight your wars. The robots are a whole other layer, they're not just machines. They're basically prisoners too. Reducing it all to a hug is a major oversimplification.

Exactly, the robots are just kids in a different kind of cage.

Man, that's perfect. I always got hung up on the religious stuff and the weird ending. But your plumber is right... it's really just a show about sad people in big machines. Like, I used to think the angels were super deep, but they're just things that show up so the sad people have to fight. The kid does need a hug, and so does his dad. That's the whole story when you boil it down.
