Quoting a nutrition study at a barbecue brought the party to a halt...
I was explaining the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber to a friend when another guest asked for sources... That led me to mention a recent journal article, and suddenly everyone stopped talking. It was like the sizzle from the grill was the only sound left. Honestly, it made me realize how academic nutrition talk can drain the fun out of sharing a meal... Now I think twice before bringing up facts in social settings.

Academic talk can totally derail a chill gathering like that. It's easy to forget not everyone wants a lecture with their burger. Finding that balance between info and vibe is tricky but necessary.

Relate so hard (I cited a journal at a barbecue once).

In my experience, weaving academic references into casual talk can backfire if it feels like a lecture. For instance, citing a sociology paper on group dynamics while people are just chatting about sports might shut down the conversation. But sometimes it sparks a genuine interest, like when someone brought up a food science journal to debate the best way to marinate steak. Your mileage may vary, of course, depending on the crowd. I've found that prefacing it with 'I read this interesting thing' helps keep it light. Take that with a grain of salt, though, as I've definitely been the guy who killed the vibe by over-citing.
