Got schooled on proper headspacing the hard way

I almost ruined a classic Mauser by guessing the measurements, lol. Now I double-check with gauges every time, no exceptions.

My buddy learned that lesson with an old Enfield. He guessed on the headspace and nearly rounded the lugs trying to close the bolt. Watching him sweat bullets over that rifle made me a gauge believer forever.

Hearing these close calls really drives the point home. Headspace isn't something to eyeball, it's a precise tolerance that keeps everyone safe. I've seen barrels bulge from too much headspace, and it's not a pretty sight. That's why I tell all my friends to just buy the gauge set. Skipping that step turns a fun project into a scary accident real fast.

Yeah, that's the scary part... it's so easy to think you can just feel it out. My first AR build had me sweating over the same thing. Ended up borrowing a set of gauges from a guy at the range, and sure enough, my bolt was just a hair out of spec. Felt fine by hand, but the gauge told the real story. Saved me from a real bad day at the range for sure. Now I just factor the cost of a gauge into any new caliber I mess with.
