Unpopular opinion: I quit using tape for glass handling years ago
My breakage rate dropped by half once I switched to suction cups alone.

Seriously! I had the exact same thing happen. That blue tape was more trouble than it was worth... always catching on the edge of the glass just wrong. Switched to a good pair of suction cups and it just feels more direct, like you have a better feel for what you're holding. The tape just added a weird step that could go wrong. My breakage went way down too, so you're totally onto something.

Yeah, that catching feeling is exactly it. You lose all the fine control with the tape, it's like trying to work with gloves on. The suction cups just connect you to the glass, no weird middle layer to mess things up. I'm glad your breakage dropped, that's the real proof right there. Makes you wonder why the tape method ever got popular in the first place.
