My $25 heat mat for seed starting was a total game changer
I was struggling with slow germination for my peppers and tomatoes here in Michigan. I got a basic seedling heat mat online, and my seeds popped up in half the time this spring. What's the best way you've found to keep seedlings warm without spending a lot?

I used to be on team windowsill too, until I tried a mat last year for my San Marzano tomatoes. They took over two weeks to show up before, but with the mat they were up in five days. It just makes sense for heat loving plants in a cold climate. I keep mine on a timer and check the cord, haven't had any issues.

Did you have any trouble with damping off those first few days on the mat, or did the timer help you avoid that? I always worry about keeping them too wet and warm once they pop up, especially with tomatoes. Seems like a fine line between giving them a good start and cooking the roots.

Honestly those mats can be a fire hazard if you're not careful. A sunny windowsill works just fine for most people without the extra cost or worry. Sometimes the simple way is the better way.
