Just tested a 'fast' wireless charger for my phone and it got alarmingly hot

Check the wattage on the charger. Some of those fast ones get hot by design, it's normal.

Totally agree, my phone charger gets crazy hot sometimes. I've got one of those 45 watt bricks for my Samsung and you could fry an egg on it after a half hour. As long as it's not melting the plastic, you're probably fine.
