Heard a guy at the hardware store say he finishes everything with a coat of spray poly

I was grabbing some denatured alcohol last week and this guy in line was telling his friend he uses spray polyurethane on every piece, even a big oak dining table he just did. He said it was 'fast and perfect every time.' I just stood there, thinking about the drips and the lack of build. It made me realize how many people skip the basics for speed. Has anyone else run into someone with a truly wild finishing method that just made you shake your head?
