Warning: I stopped saying yes to every project for three months and my income went up.
I used to take any job that came my way, even the ones that paid little and were a pain. In April, I decided to only take work that paid my full rate and fit my skills. My project count dropped from about 8 a month to 4. But my average project fee went from $500 to $1200. I had more time to do good work and find better clients. The change was scary but it paid off. Has anyone else set a firm rate floor and seen a real difference?

My buddy did the same thing, dropped his low paying clients and his next contract was triple his old rate.

Setting a floor is the best move I ever made. I used to waste weeks on a $300 website for a friend of a friend. Now I tell them my minimum is for a basic site, and suddenly they find the budget or go away. The free time lets you chase the real money jobs instead of being stuck in cheap work hell.
