Back when I started mixing, I kept everything in old jam jars.
I used to just grab a clean spoon, dump some ink in, and hope for the best. My notes were scribbles on sticky notes that faded or got lost. The big change came about two years ago after a batch of what should have been a nice teal turned into a murky brown sludge. I got serious and bought a set of 5ml glass vials and a pack of those tiny plastic pipettes. Now I measure everything, even if it's just a few drops, and I keep a proper notebook with the date, ratios, and pen I tested it in. It feels less like wild guesswork and more like I'm actually learning something. Anyone else have a specific tool that made your mixing process way better?

Honestly, I went the opposite way! All that careful measuring started to kill the fun for me. I had a drawer full of pipettes and vials and felt like I was back in a school lab. My best mixes lately have come from just using a clean dip pen nib to add ink drop by drop right into a sample vial. I keep a simple log, but the freedom to just tweak on the fly brought the joy back. Sometimes that messy, guesswork phase is where you find a happy accident you'd never plan for.

Your dip pen method sounds way more fun than pipettes. Do you find it harder to recreate a color you really love without exact measurements, or does the log cover it?

Read somewhere that a lot of pro mixers actually do their best work by feel and just write down the final recipe. Happy accidents are way more fun than being a perfectionist with a scale.
