A near-miss with a cracked flask on a Tuesday morning

I was pouring a set of small bronze brackets in our Toledo shop when I saw a hairline crack in the side of the flask. I stopped the pour with about 10 pounds of metal still in the ladle. We let the mold cool, broke it apart carefully, and found the crack had just started to weep. If I hadn't caught it, we would have had a real mess and ruined the castings. Has anyone else had a flask crack during a pour, and what's your go-to check before you start?

You check for cracks before heating, right?
