Trying to attach a rusty gear to a piece of driftwood took me three whole evenings!

My last wood glue project was a total disaster.

Try scrubbing that rust off first with a wire brush and some vinegar. It breaks up that loose oxide layer so the glue can actually grab onto something solid. Trust me, ten minutes of prep beats three nights of frustration.

That rust is probably the real problem, not the glue. The metal oxide layer acts like a barrier, so the adhesive is just sticking to loose powder. A quick scrub with vinegar and a wire brush first makes all the difference. It adds maybe ten minutes to the job, but saves those three evenings of frustration. The wood surface matters too, but getting the metal clean is the step everyone forgets.
