My book club's attempt at a themed night for 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' went a bit off the rails

We decided to make the 'sparkling cider' the book mentions, but my friend mixed up the bottles and used the kind that's meant for cooking, not drinking. It happened right before our meeting last Tuesday. We all took a sip and it tasted like sweet vinegar, which led to a lot of coughing and laughing. Has anyone else had a group activity for a found family story go hilariously wrong?

Wait, cooking cider? What even is that?

Imagine boiling apple juice with spices until it's thick and syrupy, that's cooking cider. People use it in recipes like glazes for ham or in apple butter. It's basically just cider you reduce down to make the flavor stronger. Not something you'd usually drink straight from a mug.
