A bride's mom said my centerpieces looked 'cheap' and it stung, but she was right
I did a wedding last month in Portland where the mother of the bride pulled me aside. She said, 'The flowers are pretty, but the vases look like something from a dollar store.' I was mad at first, using those clear glass cylinders I bought in bulk. But I looked at my photos next to other florists' work and saw it. The simple vase made a $200 arrangement look thin. I switched to renting heavier, textured ceramic pots from a local supplier for events, even though it cuts my profit a bit. The visual weight makes the flowers pop way more. Has anyone else had a client point out a blind spot you didn't know you had? What did you change?

Cheap vases let the flowers be the star.

Man, that reminds me of my buddy who runs a bakery. He used those basic white cardboard boxes for everything, thought it was fine. Then a regular customer told him his amazing cupcakes felt like a gas station buy because of the flimsy box. He was crushed, but she was totally right. He switched to these nicer, thicker boxes with a simple stamp logo, and suddenly people treated his stuff like a real luxury product. It's like what @noah917 said, but sometimes the "simple" thing just looks... cheap.
