The way some guys cut around a toilet flange drives me nuts

I was helping a buddy finish a job in Tempe last month and he just cut a big square hole for the flange... left a full inch gap all around. He said it would be covered by the toilet anyway. But that's how you get soft spots and squeaks later on. I always cut it tight, maybe an eighth inch out, so the board is fully supported. Does anyone else see this all the time or is it just me?

Oh man, that reminds me of a house my friend bought. The flipper had done the same thing, huge gaps around every flange. Felt like walking on a trampoline in the bathroom. They had to tear it all out and redo the subfloor because it was already spongy. It's pure laziness, and it always comes back to bite someone later.

Spongy subfloor already? That's a whole new level of hack job.

Just wait until the toilet starts rocking like a carnival ride.
