Just blew $75 on a 'universal' power adapter that fried my Atari 2600's board.

The voltage was right but the polarity was reversed, so check your old gear's power input with a multimeter before you plug anything new in, has anyone found a good source for proper OEM-style adapters?

Totally agree about those old shops. Sometimes they can even rebuild a dead adapter if you bring it in, saves you hunting for the exact match.

Ugh that's the worst feeling, sorry man. Honestly I've stopped trusting those universal adapters completely, even when the specs look right. Lately I just hunt down old radio shack or electronics repair shops in my area, the kind run by older guys who actually know this stuff. They usually have bins of old, correct adapters they'll sell for a few bucks or can at least point you to a real source.

My universal adapter collection is basically a fire hazard.
