My dad called my film camera a 'hipster toy' and I almost lost it

He said 'why waste money on old tech when your phone takes perfect pictures?' I was showing him my shots from a roll of Portra 400, and he just didn't get it. It hit different because he used to shoot film himself back in the 80s. Now I'm wondering, how do you explain the point of film to people who think it's just a fad?

Ugh, my uncle says the same thing. Pulled out my Pentax and he called it a museum piece. It's not about the tech, it's about the feel, you know?

Tell him museums charge admission. Your Pentax is a private collection.

Your dad calling it a hipster toy stings because he should know better. It's not about being old or new. A phone gives you a quick file, but film gives you a physical thing you held in your hands. It's the difference between a text message and a handwritten letter. The waiting, the cost per shot, it makes you slow down and really see what's in the frame.
