Stretchy fabric on a straight stitch machine - disaster or doable?

Was sewing a jersey knit dress last Saturday and my machine ate the hem so bad I had to cut 6 inches off the bottom. Some folks swear by a ballpoint needle and walking foot, others say you need a serger or nothing works. Which side are you on?

six inches?? bro that’s brutal, i would’ve just cried on the spot honestly. my machine ate a t shirt hem once and i only lost two inches and i was mad for a week. ballpoint needle is legit tho, i swear by it for stretchy stuff. also try a walking foot if you haven’t, it keeps layers from shifting so you don’t get that wavy mess. but if you’re doing a lot of knits, a serger is really worth saving up for eventually.

Totally agree with @xenar14, losing six inches of fabric is a hard lesson in respecting your machine.
