Spent $180 on a custom pattern draft and got a paper bag with a waistband
I paid a local pattern maker $180 to draft a pair of trousers from my measurements. She had good reviews and a website full of polished sketches. What I got back looked like a paper bag with a waistband attached. The crotch curve was way too low and the legs were three inches too wide. I tried to fix it myself but ended up wasting three evenings and a yard of nice wool suiting. She refused to refund me because she claimed I measured wrong. Has anyone else had a custom pattern go completely sideways like this?

Found a sewist on Etsy who sends you a test muslin first before doing the final pattern.

Oh man that's actually smart, wish I'd thought of that before dropping $60 on a pattern that fit like a garbage bag. The test muslin thing saves so much headache because you can catch stuff like the shoulders being too wide or the waist hit point being off before you cut into your good fabric. Just make sure they actually adjust the pattern based on the muslin feedback and don't just send it back with a "looks good!" note, had that happen once and ended up with a dress that still pulled across the back.
