My bedroom paint job inspired a two-tone coat design
I was repainting my bedroom last weekend and chose a deep blue for one wall and a light gray for the others. It looked so sharp that I started sketching a coat design with the same color split. The contrast made me think about how fabrics with different textures could play off each other. The way the colors meet at the corner of the wall gave me the idea for a seam detail on the coat. I'm now working on a winter coat that uses wool on one side and smooth polyester on the other. It's got me excited to try new things with my design skills. Has anyone else found inspiration from home projects like this? I'd love to hear how your surroundings affect your fashion ideas.

How are you dealing with the different fabrics stretching at different rates? I once made a jacket like that and had to add a stiff layer to the seam to keep it from pulling apart. It's a cool idea, just test a small piece first to save yourself headache later.

Totally feel that fabric stretch pain... had a hoodie fall apart at the shoulders once from mixing materials. Reese is right about the wavy seam thing too, it just looks sad after a while. Testing a swatch sounds boring but it really does save your whole project. Makes you wish all fabric just behaved the same, but where's the fun in that, I guess.

Oh man, that's such a cool idea, pulling design from a paint job. Really smart. And Max is totally right about the fabric headache, it's a sneaky problem. I tried something similar with a vest once mixing materials and the seam looked wavy after one wash, it was so annoying. Definitely make a little test swatch first, it saves so much time and fabric. But don't let that stop you, the concept sounds awesome.
