I heard a client in Dallas say her last facialist used a comedone extractor on active acne and it left marks

She was in my chair last Thursday and pointed to a spot on her cheek, saying, 'My old girl just went at it while it was red and angry.' It made me stop and think about how often we might rush that step for quick results. I've been guilty of it too, wanting to clear the pore immediately. Now I'm sticking to my rule of only extracting truly ready, non-inflamed comedones. Has anyone else had to really slow themselves down during extractions to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

My old boss in Tampa taught me to wait for the white head.

Whoa, hold on! I gotta disagree. My sister sees an amazing esthetician who goes after the inflamed stuff, but she does it a certain way with steam and gloves. The marks my sister got before were from picking, not from a pro extraction. If you wait until a pimple is totally flat, isn't the gunk just stuck in there longer? I feel like gentle pressure on an angry one can actually speed up healing if you know what you're doing.

Actually, that trapped gunk can still work its way out on its own.
