Part delays on old hydraulics: wait for OEM or use compatible parts?

Had a 80s hydraulic elevator down last month. The official seal was back-ordered for two months. I used a generic seal and got it running same day. Some guys say this is a safety no-go. Others think service comes first. What's your call?

Would you trust a generic part in a system that holds people in the air? Those seals are made for exact fits, and a wrong one could fail without warning. Cutting corners on safety always costs more in the end.
