Chose hot air over soldering iron for that micro USB port swap

I figured hot air would save time on that tablet connector but I ended up melting the nearby plastic housing. Has anyone else had better luck just using a fine tip iron for those tight spots?

Learned that lesson the hard way myself last year, turned a simple connector swap into a full plastic housing rebuild. Thought I could be clever with the hot air station and ended up with a melted mess that looked like modern art. Now I just accept the extra time with the iron and save the hot air for bigger jobs where I have room to breathe.

and the thing is, @andrew916, I gotta push back a little on the "save the hot air for bigger jobs" part. I mean, it's a solid rule for most surface mount stuff for sure, but for those tiny connectors with plastic housings? That's actually where the hot air shines if you do it right. The trick is to use Kapton tape to shield the plastic bits and run the temp way lower than you'd think, like 250-260C instead of the usual 300+. I melted a few connectors myself before I figured that out, feels like a rite of passage for everyone who picks up a hot air station. So yeah, the iron is safer for a single pin, but if you ever get a batch of these to swap, give the hot air another shot with the tape and lower temp. It's a total game changer once you dial it in, I swear.
