Update: A client in Denver asked me why I don't use a story stick for every job

I started using one last week for a whole-house remodel and it cut my layout time by at least an hour per room, which has me wondering what other old-school tricks I'm missing.

Read a thing about using a chalk line reel for more than just snapping lines. You ever use the case itself as a quick story stick by marking lengths right on it?

Heard about guys using their tape measure case as a story stick too, marking common stud and jamb heights right on the plastic. My old boss swore by a folded-up paper template for outlet heights, kept it in his tool belt. He'd just unfold it and slap it on the wall to mark every box. Simple stuff like that saves so many trips up and down the ladder.
