My mud pan cracked on a big ceiling job in Spokane

Was finishing a 20 foot cathedral ceiling, pan just split down the middle. Mud went everywhere, all over the floor. Had to run to the local supply house and grab a new Marshalltown 14 inch. Anyone have a trick to keep a pan from cracking like that?

Ever try a plastic pan instead?

My cast iron is fine after 20 years though...
