Wait, isn't the real problem that you have to match the texture AND the color? That old ceiling texture has probably yellowed a lot over the years. Even if you get the pattern right, a fresh patch will stand out because it's pure white. You might need to stain the new stuff with tea or something to get the age to match. It's never just about the texture.

Used to think texture was no big deal until I tried to fix a small spot myself. That stuff is way harder to match than it looks from the ground. Totally get your pain now.
