Found a weird trick for taping inside corners from a 1970s trade manual

I was digging through old books at the library in Boise and found a 'Drywall Handbook' from 1974. It said to dampen the paper tape with a sponge before you bed it in the corner... not soaking wet, just damp. Tried it on a job yesterday and it laid down way flatter with almost no bubbles. Anyone else ever hear of this old-school method?

Damp tape dries with the mud, mold isn't an issue if you're using the right materials.

Sounds like a great way to grow mold in your walls. That damp paper is just asking for trouble, especially if you live somewhere humid. Modern mud is designed to work with dry tape for a reason. You're just adding an extra step that can cause bigger problems down the road.
