Just dropped $400 on a marine-grade water pump that lasted 3 months
Fell for the hype on that fancy Johnson pump everyone raves about. Bought it off a guy at the Key West dock who swore it was the best thing for liveaboards. Three months later the impeller shredded and it started leaking salt water into my bilge. That's $400 down the drain plus another $60 for a cheap impeller kit that didn't fit right. Stick with the basic Jabsco model from West Marine for $150, it's ugly but it'll run for years. Anyone else get burned on overpriced boat parts that failed fast?

So that Key West guy is still on the dock pushing Johnson pumps huh? I've never seen a marine part that cost more than $250 actually last longer than a season. Last summer I splurged on a "heavy duty" raw water strainer that was basically just a fancy plastic tube with a screen. Rusted through in two months and left green slime all over my engine bay. Salt water doesn't care about your fancy sales pitch or your price tag.

Used to think paying more meant better gear, but @lucas498 that raw water strainer story totally flipped my view. Salt water doesn't give a damn about price tags, just chews up anything it touches.
